A great bag held back by a critical flaw

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I use to LOVE Dakine gear. I originally was exposed to them via Kiteboarding and loved how durable the bags were. I bought myself a Dakine Network backpack nearly 14 years ago and aside from a little wear and tear it is still going strong. Based on that rock solid performance I wanted to buy my wife something that would last. I immediately thought of Dakine and found the Verge 32L. I seemed like the perfect fit. My wife was super excited at having some gear that she could count on (or so we thought). The storage and organization made it seem like the perfect bag for everyday commutes and also for trips abroad. Alas after less than 7 months the shoulder straps are tearing right out of the bag. Upon closer inspection it was obvious that this was a design flaw. The interface of the strap with the bag creates tension points that focus the load of the bag onto one side of a strap as you pick it up. On the other hand, my old network backpack (not the revision the ended with) had a single piece yoke that made up the shoulder straps. This allowed it to distribute the load across the entire top of the backpack when you picked it up. Looking through Dakine's catalog, it appears that the campus line still uses that mono piece yoke. I might have to go check one out to see if it will hold up any better.

Perfect Travel Bag

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I’ve been looking for a year or so for a great travel bag that could go 4-7 days worth of clothes. I almost bought a different brand and these came out and seemed perfect. I’ve only used it once, but the pockets are awesome, the bag is spacious and opens up all the way, and I love the zip up water bottle holder. The sternum strap is a little flimsy and the strap keepers could be better, but overall I love it. It’s made of cordura so I know it’ll last a long time. The bold caramel is great because the inside is a light yellow, allowing me to see everything easily. I don’t travel with a laptop or iPad usually, but I like the organization for pens and papers if needed.
