Why We Like The KEEN Zionic Speed Shoe

When we feel the need for speed, we slip into the new KEEN Zionic Speed for lightweight performance. Like all KEEN footwear, the Zionic Speed keeps us comfortable with a contoured fit that's built to fit around our feet, giving us extra room in the toes. At the same time, it's lighter than other trail shoes, lightening our load for fast hikes with light daypacks on our backs. The Speed may save us weight, but it still features an air-injected PU midsole for durable cushioning, an Achilles pad for added comfort, and a mid-foot shank for added support to take on tough terrain.

Comfortable, best for wide feet

One of the most comfortable shoes I’ve worn. Unfortunately, too wide for my foot.

Comfortable

Ordered a men’s 9.5 as the women’s size 11 didn’t come in wide. The fit is perfect.

Value, comfort, and support

Ordered the speed hiking shoe before a vacation. Had been suffering heel pain for weeks with very slow improvement. The shoes arrived the day before we left so no break in. They have been a dream! 20k steps a day and 100 floors while hiking around Cabo. Foot feels fine!

My Zionic Speed Hiking Shoe Experience

These are abit tight and ridgid at first compared to many new hiking shoes I've had. They are starting to be more comfortable the more I wear them. I wish the laces were a bit longer, as I have a high instep. I'm looking forward to a long relationship after I break them in.

Very satisfied with this shoe.

Very satisfied with this shoe. Works well in loose dirt and wet conditions. Will try in sandy soil in weeks to come.

Heel lock and comfort needed

Tried these out and was pleasantly surprised at the room in the toe box. I typically wear Keen styles with the original fit, so having the extra room for toe splay was great to see with what looks like a sleeker style. That said, the interior of the heel feels awkward and uncomfortable as all get out. The little fancy pads on the side meant to help secure your heel actually chafe on my heel and I find that the rear of the heel fits insecurely. Lo and behold, Keen opted to not have some form of heel lock feature that is common on most of their shoes and boots and no matter how tightly I try and fasten the laces, I still get heel slippage. Oddly enough, I tried the waterproof version, which has a more traditional interior in the heel and it fits snugly and comfortably, as it should. The tradeoff comes in interior space. The same size that fits my forefoot and which I normally wear in Keen shoes, 11.5, feels incredibly cramped with the waterproof Zionic. A bump up to 12 affords more room in the waterproof version, but for my part, it lengthens the shoe enough that the buckle point in the material is off and I feel it buckling into the top of my smaller toes when stepping off, which will likely chafe over time. I also find that these don't work well with orthotics, as a number of keen styles tend to. What do I like? The Zionic have a full-length TPU rock plate, which obviously protects the bottom of your foot, while also offering a bit of spring in your stride. It also offers a pretty stable feel under foot, something I was worried about with the height of the cushioning. If the heel interior fit like the waterproof version, I would have kept these. As it is, it feels much too sparse and loose in the heel, which leads to the slippage and chafing. All in all, Keen has some solid elements to build off with the Zionic and I'll be interested to revisit this style, should Keen update it with a second version in the future.
