Why We Like The G5 Evo Mountaineering Boot

The higher the altitude the happier we are, especially when we zip up La Sportiva's G5 Evo Mountaineering Boot. It's an ultra-technical boot that specializes in high-altitude mountaineering and ice climbing. We appreciate the internal bootie's GORE-TEX Infinium Thermium waterproofing that's air permeable (ie. highly breathable) for extremely active pursuits, and the gaiter's stretchy Cordura fabric is built for the long haul. It's also conveniently quick to zip into, which we never thought we'd like enough to mention but comes in handy following cold mornings at base camp.

Great for waterfall ice

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Not sure why the 3 and 4 star reviews, these have been great. The BOA on the outside is a game changer for steep multi pitch ice. The zipper and upper cuff are a bit odd, but most boots in this category have some weird design choices. The zipper and cuff work, the boots are relatively waterproof. I even had one of them successfully stretched out in the fifth metatarsal area for a wide left foot. Great lower 48 ice climbing boots in my opinion. I found I had to downsize quite a bit, I'm typically a 10-10.5 in running shoes and ended up with a 42 with custom footbeds.

Now even better

I have climbed in these boots in all conditions and terrains and they have never faltered. From the Ice Field Parkway in Canada to The South fork Valley near Cody WY Keystone Canyon in Valdez Alaska and The Ouray Ice Park they have performed incredibly well. They are light, comfortable, responsive to placement and warm. And the new model with the BOA system and waterproof membrane made them even better. They run slightly small. I think they are best technical backcountry water ice boots out there.

Disappointing

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I gave these a shot knowing that La Sportiva runs narrow simply because there aren't a lot of boots like these around. Lowa has been out of my size in the Alpine Ice model for two straight seasons now. In any case, it wasn't the width that made these a no-go for me but the cuff. I guess I have large calves, as I could barely zip these up wearing only socks. But also for the price these seem a little light on quality. The main zipper feels like it's going to break when just testing its action. The velcro strip that seals over the zipper is extremely narrow and has no flex in the material it's attached to, making it hard to seal. Couldn't have imagined doing it in the cold with snow frozen into the velcro with gloves on. The strap that tightens over the inner non-removable bootie is placed oddly and is hard to thread through its buckle. But they're certainly light!
