Trango Tower GTX Mountaineering Boot

A far cry from the bulky alpine boots of yesteryear, the La Sportiva Men's Trango Tower GTX Mountaineering Boot offers ultralight warmth and support to help you scale towering peaks in remarkable comfort—relatively speaking, at least. After all, if you don't suffer a little, then the mountain wasn't big enough.

Gore-Tex Performance Comfort keeps your foot dry when you get caught off-guard by a freak snowstorm in the middle of summer, but still breathes well to keep you from overheating at lower altitudes. The rugged upper with Honey-Comb reinforcements withstands the roughest punishment the mountain can dish out. PU in the midsole offers support and cushioning when moving over rocky terrain, and EVA inserts decrease weight while still absorbing impacts and providing excellent rebound. Rounding it out is a Vibram One outsole for reliable traction on precarious ridgelines and the durability needed to withstand season after season in the high alpine. This sole is also equipped with an Impact Brake System for better control on descents.

Very comfortable, poor quality.

Initial fit of boots was amazing, but simply did not last. One week of heavy use off trail and wore through rand, boot, and sole.

La Sportiva product features video

Lightweight, modern, Gore-Tex boot with the unmistakable aesthetic function of the Trango series, designed for mountain hiking, via ferrata and backpacking with heavy loads.

The Perfect "Kili" Boots!

When I decided to climb Kilimanjaro in 2018, I was provided a gear list by my guide company suggesting that I purchase a light to mid-weight hiking boot (I emailed them for clarity). What they said was that taking into consideration all the various climate zones that we would encounter over 12-days on the Lemosho route, I was going to need a boot that was versatile enough to keep me dry in the rain forest, comfortable enough to wear on long days, yet technical enough for some light scrambling and class 3 climbing. It also had to be warm enough for a cold, O’ dark-thirty summit morning (they also suggested bringing crampons just in case). I already owned the La Sportiva’s Nucleo High GTX hiking boots in a size 46. They are a lightweight, Gore-Tex boot that is very breathable and extremely comfortable while hiking, scrambling, etc. But I gave into my concern about them possibly not being warm enough for the higher altitudes and summit morning and purchased the Trango Tower GTX in a size 46 to be on the safe side (I normally wear a size 11.5 in my running shoes but was given great advise to size up to account for thicker socks, feet swelling at altitude, and to minimize banging my toenails on the decent and possibly losing them). In addition, I’m not a big fan of strap-on crampons that I’d have to use anyway. Fortunately, I was able to break the Trango’s in on a number of hikes, to include some scrambling, prior to departing (highly recommend using Superfeet inserts). I really liked the dual-lacing zones that allows me to adjust the ankle section depending on the terrain. Because they have a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane, my feet stayed dry in the rain forest and for the rest of the trip. With the Vibram soles, I found these to be very durable, abrasion resistant, and they held up well and didn’t disappoint while scrambling up and ascending the 840’ Barranco Wall. Luckily I’d purchased the Grivel G-12 New Matic crampons because we had nearly 5-feet of new snow at the summit and needed to put on our crampons just below Stella Point (the hybrid G-12’s in combination with my Trango’s worked perfect). All in all, they did great. They held up well considering all the rain, scree, and road debris that we encountered over 12-days while climbing Kilimanjaro. Bottom line, this is a fantastic 3-season boot that is durable and lightweight enough to be extremely comfortable yet technical enough to get you where you need to go!

Great all mountain boot

I bought these boots for a Mt Kilimanjaro trip. Over the course of 6 days (Marangu route) and 42 miles, these boots performed great. What really surprised me from the get go was how comfortable thses boots are. For a mountaineering boot that is capable of WI3-4 climbing, these are great hiking boots. The entire 6 day Kilimajaro trek/summit, I never experienced a blister or hotspot. I normally wear a size 9 (42) street shoe. I ordered a size 10 (43). Perfect fit with a pair of medium wool hiking socks. Will bring thses along on my next ice climbing trip to see how they perform. Wish they had a toe bail for automatic crampons. They do have a heel welt for crampons. Overall a great boot and would buy again. REVIEW UPDATE post Mt Kilimanjaro: These boots exceeded my expectations. We did the 5 day Marangu route which is about a 42 mile round trip. No blisters, hotspots, or complaints. The boots are flat out a great hiking boot. As far as the ice climbing, they're legitimate WI4 climbing boots. I didn't climb anything steeper. I used the BD Cyborg clip crampons with the universal toe bail and heal clip in. The crampons and boots are a great setup. As a comparison my normal ice climbing setup is the La Sportiva Nepal Cube GTX with the BD Stinger pro crampon. The Trango Towers and Cyborgs are almost as good. Pretty amazing when you consider how good the boots feel when hiking. La Sportiva I think just released the Trango Tower Extreme GTX which is the newest version of the Trango Tower and will accept automatic crampons. Don't know how the new version will hike but if they're the same as the regular Trango Towers that might be the boot to get. Overall, I am updating my rating to a 10 out of 10. La Sportiva really knocked it out of the park with this one. Hope this helps and good luck with your adventures.

Okay for the price

Familiarity:

If you want a basic boot to get out there and climb than these are fine boots. Probably better suited for spring mountaineering boots but I have used them for pure steep ice. My only complaint which is a big one, is the fit. I have no idea what the La Sportiva designers were doing. Sizing is fine but the top of the boot fits extremely tight. So in order lace the boots up tight to prevent heel lift you will definitely cut of circulation and your toes will freeze. So the boots are not warm at all. The will work with single pitch chill days at the crag but I would not recommend them for multi pitch.

Get These!

Bought these boots because I REALLY needed a new pair before a trek to Gokyo Lakes in Nepal. It was a risk because of the short time frame. The boots were awesome!! Highly recommend.

Fantastic on the rocks

I bought these boots to train and use for Mount Kilimanjaro. It took quite awhile to break them in but once broken in and taken on the trip, they did not disappoint. Most of Kilimanjaro is rocky terrain with slippery rocks and moderate climbing. We took the Machame Route and these boots were perfect for it. I was able to dance and climb around the rocks without poles. These boots stuck to everything and gave me an added sense of security my other team mates did not have. I ended up donating them to one of the guides after the climb. His own boots were quite tattered and he was quite thrilled with the gift. As for myself, I’ll be picking up a new pair to break in. I highly recommend these boots for rocky terrain that requires traction when you need it most. Enjoy the journey.

Comfortable and Technical!

Great hybrid between a hiking boot and a technical boot. Ideal for snow/glacier travel and easy ice, but I have used it both for long approaches and vertical ice without complaints. Comfortable enough for 22 miles of Mt. Whitney and technical enough to take on WI5 in the Michigan winter- not many boots can claim both! Semi-auto crampons are fast on and off and with some thick warm socks they have kept my toes warm down to around 0 F. Highly recommended, especially if you can find a deal on them!
