Why We Like The Chameleon 8 Stretch Hiking Shoe

The best part about hiking is venturing off the beaten path into the unknown, which demands gear we can count on to safely guide us there and back. Merrell’s Chameleon 8 Stretch Hiking Shoe implements rubber toe and heel caps to provide us with protection against rock deflections and prevent abrasions, keeping us feeling confident when exploring new terrain. Not to mention, the aggressively lugged Vibram outsole helps us stay upright and comfortable when the once-dusty trail turns wet and sloppy thanks to unexpected rainstorms.

Third pair and I keep coming back!

This my third pair of Chameleons. Originally, I was looking for a light trail/strolling shoe. They have become my everyday wear. My first pair were a lighter color and word out perfectly. I wore them to do pretty much everything except heavy mountain climbing. (I leave that to my Limmer customs). The some finally got too thin. Based on my early good experience with the first pair, I bought a pair of the Black Chameleons to keep in reserve. U liked the first pair, I didn’t want to risk a change in the recipe. After the first pair, I resorted to the Blacks as my everyday wear. They did not hold up as well.. the outer toe area split from the sole. Not good for keeping feet dry by they were still comfy. As the second pair was wearing, I went back to a pair of the lighter colored shoes. Put them on and I can barely tell they’re different than the shoes I’ve been wearing for 16 months. Hope they hold up as well. Let’s just hope the recipe is the same next time U need new shoes….

Rubber socks

True to size but still very comfortable shoe, solid support but not too wide, feels great when driving my manual transmission car (WRX) for some reason they double as great driving shoes. Love the minimalist approach, you don't even need to tighten the bungee laces. The locking mechanism is a bit fiddly and my big heel struggles to get inside the neck of the shoe, but once in fits like a glove. Very happy customer.

These shoes are my salvation!

I was shooting a concert for Billy Idol at the Hoover Dam and one of his road crew had these shoes on… I asked him how they held up to tour life and he talked to me about these shoes for the next 30 minutes! He loves these shoes! So when I got back home I ordered myself a pair! I feel like they’re a little heavy but oh man do they feel good on my feet! I am recovering from plantar fasciitis and these issues are not only beneficial to me because of the excellent support, also they look pretty dang cool. I mean it, they are a great looking shoe!! I haven’t been hiking but I did shoot a concert at red rocks recently with them and they held up great! The abrasive dirt cleaned right off of them and they look brand new even after spending three days working at red rocks.

2Honest opinion

These are the most worn shoes out of the pair of 3 that I own. I have had these shoes for over a year and I still chose to wear them over some other shoes that I have.

Narrow Toe Box

Be aware, these have a very narrow toe box and are evidently built on a different last than their other shoes. They are also slightly smaller than the size would indicate.

Comfortable and durable

Comfortable and durable. I put many miles on my last pair over the course of two years. No hesitation replacing with another of the exact same type.

2nd Pair

This is my second pair - very comfortable, they do not slip on the foot, provide great traction when hiking, camping or doing chores

Nice but lace lock suks.

Love the arch and sole. Look original and feel very comfortable. But how does Merrell manage to make a garbage(I have a better word) lace lock system. Incredibly annoying.
