Why We Like The Merrell Mtl Long Sky 2 Trail Running Shoe

When regularly clearing double-digit miles on trail, we rely on the Merrell Mtl Long Sky 2 Trail Running Shoe to keep our feet and stride happy. The reinforced mesh upper lets our feet breathe easy and dries off quick after bounding through mud and rivulets, while the Vibram Megagrip sole keeps our strikes and toe offs secure with its sticky rubber compound and earth-eating lugs. As we stride from valley to ridgeline and back, the internal bootie keeps our foot comfortably locked over the platform's plush foam that keeps the ground feeling soft no matter what's underfoot.

Great trail runner for steep hills and muddy trail

I ran in Bare Access Trails and XTRs for a long time before switching to Altras when those were phased out. I decided to try these to get some added traction and security on single track and am glad that I did. Midfoot lockdown is great and the toe box is just roomy enough for comfort but not so much that you slip around on descents or anything like that. The heel feels a bit wide, but using a runner's loop on the laces takes care of any slippage. The trails I run in can get very muddy and the outsole has been up to the task so far. I feel a lot more secure than I did in Altras. They also drain very well. If the toebox was a bit roomier and the heel a bit more secure, these would be perfect.

Solid Grip and light weight

My first two runs with these sneakers, i did not like them. My feet hurt as they were not used to the minimal cushion trail sneakers offer. That said, I trained for six months in the trails, all of my long runs in these sneakers. I trained for a trail 100k. My feet strengthened as I got used to the sneakers. I ran a 50k in snow, rain, mud, and dry conditions. They provided amazing traction in the snow, 4-6 inches, the dirt and helped with mud but would still slip for softer ground. I did not try them on gravel or rocky type technicality. The sneakers are light weight with a firm vibram sole to help provide some support. My only complaint, as I've seen on others, is the mesh toe box is starting to tear on the outside of the foot, right where the sneaker creases. Other than that, my 420 miles have provided to be safe, grippy, and successful. I paired these sneakers with Aonijie toe socks and finished my 100k with no blisters!

First thoughts 20 miles.

First runs it’s a solid shoe. In the first three runs I’ve thrown about everything but snow and deep mud. Handles great, breathes/drains well, and really grips on to most everything. The fit around the midfoot is nice and snug, while still having plenty of wiggle rooms at the toes. I’ve not tested the toe bumper yet but there is one. It does not to seem as robust as that on a cascadia but different style shoe. This is going on the the list of racing trail shoes for me. I’m a fairly average front middle pack runner. Biggest concern I have is durability. The lugs will be fine, not sure about the upper. Time will tell. Typically I get 600+ miles out of any shoe, so lets see how it goes!

Great fit, but the tongue and bootie let it down.

A very firm ride is good on technical and soft trails. Not necessarily the best for mixed terrain that may include asphalt. Fit: (+) Nice wide toe box for those who prefer that (like me). Easy to feel secure and locked down. (-) Bootie fit. The bootie is significantly too tight in this shoe. It is both too small and to stiff of a material. No matter how loose the laces are, the shoe is just too tight over the top of the foot causing numbness to set in after a very short period of time. The Tongue: Merrell got this very wrong here. The tongue comes too far up into the curve of the ankle and is combined with an edging material that stretches less than the bootie causing it to curl downwards toward the foot. This causes the top of the tongue to dig into the foot/ankle junction. I found this very uncomfortable. Modifications are in order: Thankfully the material and construction of this shoe lend itself to easy modification. I trimmed the tongue back considerably to provide adequate clearance to the top of the foot and cut a series of relief slots in the bootie to give it more compliance. This has made the shoe much better for me.

Bright and Light

Great support in a light, comfortable shoe. The bright color of my pair looks great too.

Overall I'm quite happy with them.

Pretty happy with this shoe. I bought them because I had an achilles issue flare up in my minimalist shoes (13mm). These offered a slight 4mm heel drop and the additional cushion definitely helped take some of the foot ache out of 8+ mile runs. I do wish they had a slightly wider toe box, but I've adapted to them. Feel snug, breathable—overall I think they're a great buy. May check out the Skyfire 2's next.

Meh.

They are OK. Fancy looking, very light. Glad I got them in the sale as they are basically foam and mesh shoes. Maybe a 1/4 size small for me but that's just me.
