Trail Glove 5 Shoe

When taking an early morning trail run through the desert, you want a lightweight, breathable shoe that still offers protection against pieces of cholla and prickly pear that may be lurking in your path. Merrell's Men's Trail Glove 5 Shoe offers a barefoot feel that maintains rugged sole protection against the sharp surprises of the Southwest. Minimalist construction and a gloved fit make your feet feel practically barefoot as you weave your way through saguaros and creosote, but you'll be able to keep your eyes on the sunrise instead of the sharp rocks.

The barefoot fad of ca. 2009 has not only fizzled out, but has swung in the complete opposite direction (see the Hoka ten-nine). I'm one of the remaining few that still searches for the numerous health and performance benefits of true minimalist running shoes, while not subjecting my bare feet to sharp rocks and broken glass. These shoes are not for everyone, if you have not worn minimalist shoes before, you may be in for a surprise, but if you're like me and you've been wearing barefoot runners for years and have been running out of true minimalist options lately, these are perfect. The greatest benefit, in my opinion, lies in their simplicity -- it's what I love most about minimalist shoes in general, but particularly Merrells. Ultrarunning shoes these days are ornamented with flashy neon colors, thick "high-heel" cushioning, and all of the latest "omni-turbo-grip" technologies, all promising to enhance performance. They don't. I love slipping these on, tying the laces, and just flying - it really feels like I'm wearing nothing. The fewer bells and whistles, the longer the shoe will ultimately last, and the stronger your feet and ankles will become while wearing them! There are just fewer parts to worry about failing. Which brings be to my second favorite part of these shoes -- durability! The past few years I started experimenting with Altras, thinking that the same zero drop feel with a little bit of cushion would help my performance in the 50 mile + distances. I was so wrong. Altras are comfortable and useful for light hiking, or walking around town, but taking them on actual mountain runs leads to their quick demise. A sloppy fit, poor traction, and zero ground-feel all added to a couple years of unfortunate performance decline and lack of enjoyment on the trails (I actually had to use spruce roots to tie a pair of Altras back together during a race after the sole ripped off). I have about 150 miles on my Merrells now, with no signs of wear and tear. My first pair of road gloves from ca. 2012 held up for 5+ years, I finally got rid of them because no amount of cleaning would get rid of the smell, and my girlfriend refused to move across the country with them in the car. The drawbacks? Not many. Some folks are upset that there is a rockplate in this version, but it's fine by me. I don't seem to notice it at all until I'm bounding over sharp rocks, and then I am very thankful for it. There might be a little more cushioning too, but again, fine by me, I can still feel the ground so all is good. I will admit traction has been a problem on slick, wet limestone and bog bridges, but the same is true for when I am actually barefoot, so I can't complain too much - it forces me to slow down and concentrate in sub-optimum conditions, which I think will ultimately prevent injury in the long run. The fit felt a bit large when I tried them on, but as soon as I started running in them I did not notice, and I have not noticed since. My feet swell a bit after 10-15 miles or so, and at that point I'm thankful for the extra space.
