Why We Like The AMG 105L Backpack
We love the AMG series from Mountain Hardwear because the intentional pocket design is paired with a robust and supportive construction for long hauls. The AMG 105 is suited for more involved forms of backpacking like mountaineering, winter camping for backcountry skiing, and navigating to high-alpine climbing routes. We love how the generously sized front pockets give quick and easy access to larger items such as avalanche safety tools, crampons, and ice axes.

Strap broke in 2
I bought this pack and used it in a 6 day mountaineering course. The inside of the shoulder strap broke in 2. The only thing holding the strap was the outside covering. It was awful. The company was very fast at issuing a refund when I sent back product and they couldn't repair it. It's spacious but the S/M size frame is big and the waist belt does not tie enough for a 30 waist inch female.

Packrafting the High Country
We have a two person pack raft that we frequently day hike with. I have been looking for a large capacity pack so we could take this boat on extended backcountry trips into alpine lakes. I purchased the AMGA 105 and recently completed a seven day, six night trip into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington State. The pack had the capacity to hold the clothing, food, fuel, pad, sleeping bag, water and a good amount of the group gear for the trip as well as the boat, oars, seats and dry bag. The packs mountaineering specific components, as it turns out, are perfectly adapted for carrying the raft and water gear. The crampon bag was the perfect storage for the paddles blades and water shoes and the ski stash areas were perfect for the graphite paddle handles, fishing, and tent poles. The tope closure with its rope retaining strap made a neat and secure attachment for the boat itself. If there were a pack designed specifically for packrafting it wouldn’t be much different from the AMGA 105. I am 64 years old, 6’ tall and 160lb. The smaller size fit well, had excellent adjustments and is durably made. Starting with 65lbs we covered 32 miles, crawled over and under many logs, ascended and descended talus slopes and spent a lot of time on good trails. This pack handled well on all of terrain.

The best heavy load carrying pack
I used this pack while putting up a new route on a remote mountain in Wyoming and can't say enough good things about it. I carried a 70+ pound pack filled with enough food for 2 weeks, enough climbing gear to tackle the uncertainties of a new alpine wall route and camping gear, 16 miles into the backcountry. The support from the frame kept the load on my back comfortable the whole time and the durability of the pack material meant it basically still looks brand new after being stuffed to the brim and dropped on sharp granite talus a long the way. The features are very well thought out on this pack too with enough straps to keep everything compressed and sitting how you see fit so the load inside the pack never shifts around. I did not use a pack cover while on this trip and did get caught in several storms and never had any issues with the contents inside getting soaking wet. I highly recommend this pack to anyone planning on carrying heavy loads long distances

looks great so far!
haven’t gotten to use it in the field yet but all early indications look very positive. Good construction, great features comfortable under lots of weight.

Great backpack
I like this backpack. It is lightweight and well designed. Recently used it to climb Mount Adam's WA and particularly liked the outer crampon sleeve. There are plenty of straps to keep things snug, though I am still learning about how to use some of them.

Love the features, not the hipbelt
I love the features of this pack. There’s nothing else that compares on the market… but the dang hipbelt! I have a 30in waist and it just doesn’t cinch down far enough. And I’m not necessarily the smallest guy. I am 5’ 11” and lift weights so I have a skinny waist but muscular frame. I have an expedition up Denali planned in the spring and I wish I could have brought this one. They should really make and sell a smaller hipbelt.

One of the best for mountaineering, climbing, week-long+ hikes
Durable, great configuration for long climbs - Aconcagua and Denali or multi-day solo hikes.. Material is excellent and outer pocket is great for crampons. Ice-axe and poles sit comfortably outside. And this is great volume yet light on payload/ it’s own weight.

Carries like a cloud
I am 60 years old, 5 foot 5inches 145lbs. A big pack hurts. My AMG fully loaded with a 4 season tent, shovel, insulated sleeping pad, -20 or -40F sleeping bag, stove, change of clothing, water, etc comes out to a third of my bodyweight. Winter backpacking in Alaska is heavy duty, I carry a lot of equipment and I am on the small side. The hip belt and padded shoulderstraps are what makes this bag great. Its also abrasion resistant to my crampons and axe. If you are an arctic adventurer you NEED this bag and it delivers. I have had mine for at least a year and its well broken in from the previous adventures. I recently got the 75 literfor daytrips on snowshoes. These bags are loaded with performance features made for Winter gear.

Great winter bag!
Great material. Buckles are great. Zippers are winter ready. My only complaint is not having access to main pouch from the side or bottom. Overall great, lightweight, large bag for multi day adventures.
