Why We Like The Front Range Ultralight Tarp Shelter

The MSR Front Range Ultralight Tarp Shelter packs small so we can stuff more gear for alpine climbs and ski traverses. Its frameless, floorless design is easy to set up with the included stakes and one of our ski poles, or trekking poles if it's summertime. It can be a shelter for sleep, a sun shade against mid-day sunshine, or a dining room for sussing beta and eating dinner with the whole crew. We also like pairing the Front Range with MSR's Front Range Bug/Floor Insert (sold separately) for greater coverage from buggy, muddy environments.

Blizzard camping win

Had a great first night in it with many exciting adventures to come! It made it through over a foot of snow that night and 15-30 mph of wind!

Light and fast

Had a great night of sleep in it after a 15k hike. was snowy and -8c with low wind. Held up well. I suggest buying larger tent peg for snowy condition.

Great ski-tour shelter for a small group

Love this shelter! Replacing my Twin Sisters with something with a little more room and I'm very satisfied. Lightweight, easy setup, and functionally spacious. If needed, we could fit 4 people plus gear in here for the duration of our touring trip, but with only three, we are much more comfortable and have all the room we need.

Outstanding group shelter

Makes an excellent light weight communal cook shelter in alpine/tundra environments. I was very impressed with how well it withstood extended periods of high wind and rain on exposed terrain. Super easy to set up with a pair of trekking poles using the straps provided.

Simple, light and easy to set up

Light weight, effective in snow and wind. Would recommend using MSR adjustable pole and 1 person Universal Footprint.

Great lightweight, super-versatile shelter.

So far a big fan of this flexible, easy to pitch multi-use shelter. Included straps for trekking poles are terrific.

Excellent lightweight tent

The MSR Front Range 4 Person Ultralight Tarp Shelter is excellent for your lightweight hiker that is looking to bring multiple guests or his family. The footprint is easily able to accommodate three people with gear or four with careful packaging. The material seems to be durable and should last a lifetime with care. Since I do not use trekking poles, I purchase the recommended pole with adjustable length; perfect fit. I would recommend purchasing some lightweight line as the stakes do not come with pulls.

Great for family backpacking

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

We’ve been backpacking with a burly 3-person Marmot tent for years. Now that we’re taking our baby along for the ride and space and weight is at a premium, my husband and I wanted a tent that was huge enough for 3-4 people and ultra light. Guys. This is it. We bought the bug mesh insert to go with the shelter, and I’m VERY glad we did for our current purposes (baby containment). It did make the tent a lot smaller—we tried having the two adults on one side of the trekking pole center and the baby on the other, but the mesh was ALL up in my husbands face with him on the outside edge and he hated it. So baby was on the edge, I was in the middle, and husband had the whole other half to himself. It felt very ample and spacious. I think we could fit another small kid in there (on the other edge) without issue and still use the mesh insert. Once the kids are bigger, though, we’d definitely ditch the insert unless absolutely necessary. You *can* fit four adults in there, but the mesh makes for a very claustrophobic experience for those on the outer edge. Shelter was easy to set up and take down, using a set of trekking poles. It did get warm at night but you can open the doors for airflow. Tent seems very rugged and durable. And best of all, I can say with total confidence that it can withstand an 11-month-old pole dancing and climbing on the poles without difficulty. I’m SO glad we bought this for family backpacking. Going from essentially a 6lb tent to a 3lb tent is amazing. And once we leave the insert behind, it’ll be even lighter.
