Sphinx 60L Backpack

Whether you're the sort of backpacker that's cramming micro brews in whatever available space is left in your pack or the kind of minimalist that's chopping their toothbrush in half just to save a few extra grams, you're sure to find all the space you need for those two-day glam-backpacking trips and minimalist week-long treks with the Mystery Ranch Sphinx Backpack. Weighing just over five pounds, the Sphinx is by no means an ultralight pack, but it is built to last with some seriously burly materials that will take some use and abuse on the trail. It does sit on the lighter end of Mystery Ranch's line of backpacking packs and implements a more streamlined design than any of its more expedition-oriented packs like the Glacier or Terraplane.

Based out of Bozeman Montana, Mystery Ranch uses the rugged mountain ranges that crisscross the Western half of the state to inform its designs, so it should come as no surprise that the materials used to build the Sphinx—210D Robic honeycomb and 330D Robic nylon—are designed to withstand the wear that comes with off-trail route finding and extended forays into remote wilderness areas. The fit of the pack can be easily customized to match your torso via the height-adjustable shoulder yoke, which consists of a hook-and-loop panel along the top of the back panel. Packing the Sphinx is made easy with its large top-loading design, and unpacking it is even easier thanks to the full-length front zip that grants easy access to the main compartment of the pack. If you are looking to trim weight from the pack for those lightweight trips, both the top lid and waist belt can be removed from the pack for a more minimalist layout.

Perfect All Around Pack

I bought this pack for backpacking/climbing trips, and I couldn't be happier. I specifically purchased this pack to use for an alpine climbing trip to Mt. Moran, but I'll use it for so much more. From long weekend backpacking trips to cragging at T-Wall this winter, this pack is going everywhere. It carries a load comfortably and has easy access to all my gear. It's a little heavier than some other 60L packs, but it will carry anything and everything that I need it to, and it will last for years and years of adventures.

Wish there were some Myer all pockets.

Did the 4 state challenge with the bag last week. Very comfortable.

Just as good as I thought it would be

I had to take a deep breath on this one because I was downsizing from 80 liters. I figured that if I couldn't fit it into a 60 liter pack then I had to reinvent some things. Happy to say that it worked out just fine. What attracted me to this model was the organization most of all. The top has two compartments sized perfectly for personal hygiene (small) and quick access items (large). The waist belt has two generously sized zipper pockets, one of which I used to store navigational stuff. The main compartment has a waterproof zipper down its full length. and there are two external torpedo pockets. Goodbye to burrowing down to the bottom of the pack for anything! Adjustability, both initial and ongoing, is easy. The fit is very comfortable once you have it dialed in. On my shakedown cruise, I tweaked the arrangement of weight in the main compartment each day and by the 4th morning I realized I was barely aware of the pack while it was on me. I don't think I ever achieved that with other packs; part of it might have been their larger capacity and their height due to that. This rig is less top heavy and better for balance while bushwhacking. Turns out I could have ordered a smaller size; it was not obvious back when I bought it that the difference is really just in the waistband. My pants are M and my shirts etc. are XL so I got the XL. Now I have some extra strap dangling but that does not affect fit otherwise. I would recommend this pack to anyone purely for the organization, but the sturdy build and the comfort deserve mention.

No Regrets

I used this for a 12 day backpacking trip in New Mexico. Probably carried around 40 lbs on average. I really like the center zip as opposed to top load only packs. Made it so much easier to access gear and stay organized. Really like the torpedo pockets also. This pack really makes it easy to stay organized. Hip belt pockets were really handy for phone and snacks. It does take a bit of experimentation to get the frame adjusted correctly.

Immediately comfortable

Great pack with super robust build quality. Perfect size for many backcountry adventures and the main zip is wonderful for quickly getting to gear. Hip belt pockets are nice and large and hold my phone. Only minor complaint is the hip pockets aren’t removable which makes attaching the MR gps or bear spray holsters a challenge.

Solid pack with great support and stuff capacity

Just took this pack on my first-ever backpacking trip, and it did its job with all the grim determination and grit that you expect from a company that caters mainly to military and first responders. There isn't much "fluff" to this pack -- the only pocket in the main chamber is for a hydration bladder. There are two long pockets that run parallel to the main chamber can hold an impressive amount of accessories while maintaining a low-profile look. Two hip pockets provide on-the-go access, while the "brain" and an interior netted pocket below the brain provide ample room for gear and snacks. This is quite a large pack, but a clever strap inside the main chamber allows you to "tie-down" smaller loads and hold everything in place. Velcro fasteners on each strap are also very nice. Zipper waterproofing makes me think that this pack would be rain-ready in all but the wettest conditions. Last but not least, the front-opening zipper is the deciding feature. It allows you to open and access all your gear without pulling everything out from the top. Overall a really solid pack that makes me thankful that I waited 3 months for it to come back in stock. Thanks Mystery Ranch!

Great Size

I have only used this pack on one Overnight hike. Hiked about 20 miles in 2 days. The frame system is great i had it loaded to about 50lbs which i know is a little more than i should have but the pack felt great on my back and shoulders.
