Why We Like The Outdoor Research Tungsten II Jacket

The Outdoor Research Tungsten II Jacket is a technical shell with body-mapped insulation to keep us warm but mobile on the mountain. That starts with a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX shell that's backed up with extra insulation in the torso to maintain our core temperature with lighter insulation in the arms for more freedom of movement when we're skiing, snowboarding, or mountaineering. The Tungsten II also features a helmet-compatible hood for more dangerous pursuits—plus an integrated powder skirt and underarm vents to keep out the powder and release pent up steam to keep us drier.

Excellent Jacket

I wore the Tungsten II for a week strait of resort skiing and absolutely loved the jacket. It was my first time on actual ski slopes, and I had the fall count to prove it. I'm not kidding, this jacket took a serious beating at the beginning and a few branch swipes once I was brave enough to do some woods runs. The first few days would have been unbearable if it weren't for this jacket and the Snowcrew Bibs. I never got snow in places it wasn't supposed to be, and I was able to regulate my body temperature with the vents quite effectively. The chest pockets are a great depth and size, the hand pockets large enough for gloved hands and quite warm. The hood fit perfectly over my helmet and was secured appropriately by the cinch cord. The Blue and Orange color scheme is quite fashionable, and garnered several nice complements that left me chuffed. After a full week on the slopes, the jacket is in excellent condition.

Not a durable jacket

Like the looks, fit, and waterproof nature of the jacket but it is simply not durable at all. This jacket has been on exactly 2 ski days on nothing but groomers. New to the sport, and had one fall on pretty soft snow. Unfortunately the jacket now has a tear in the back. Really surprised at this and would think it would not be so delicate. Super disappointing- wonder how this fabric has been test since it does not seem good for outdoor sport applications. Definitely do not recommend.

Great Jacket with light insulation

I've only been using a shell jacket for the last 5 years when skiing the resort, because I'm not a fan of bulky insulated jackets. I saw this and felt it may hit the sweet spot of light insulation for cold resort days, but able to work with different layering for other days. The jacket has worked out well. A few thoughts that could be improved upon: The powder skirt would be nice if its removeable as I've never used them, but it doesn't really get in the way. Second the OR logo stitched onto the right sleeve looks like it will tear off sooner rather than later. It would have been nice to use a different branding technique. Overall a great jacket and continues the run of quality gear from OR. I'm debating adding the Tungsten pants, but the color options leave something to be desired.

Great Jacket for Cold Temps and Storm Days

I am an OR Employee and skied in sample of this jacket a lot last winter, especially cold-temp night skiing and on storm days, as well as some frigid resort skiing in the Rockies. It's an perfect piece for all of these situations with the Gore fabric, mid-weight insulation and good venting. As a taller guy, I like the fit too, which is plenty long in the body and sleeves, but not baggy.
