Who knows where the black hole will take you.

Prepare for multi-dimensional travel—or just a week-long getaway—by packing your climbing, hiking, or travel gear in Patagonia's Black Hole 90L Duffel Bag. Inspired by rugged-yet-light alpine packs, the Black Hole features a burly ripstop fabric coated in a TPU laminate and a DWR finish for the ultimate in outdoors protection. The padded base protects your gear throughout the trip, and Patagonia padded the removable shoulder strap and removable backpack straps for comfort. Internal organizers and zippered mesh pockets organize all the small things, while the external side pocket stows the duffel for compact storage. Compression straps prevent your gear from bouncing around whether you're traveling via airplane or four-wheeler.

    This bag owns me

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I own both the 60L and the 90L and I can't say enough good things about this bag. Durable and packs a TON. Love the backpack straps for versatility and easily getting you from point A to Z. You're going to want to dump your old luggage & get one in every size :: two thumbs up Patagonia!!

    Amazing bag!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love this bag! I had to travel to Indy for a 4 day volleyball tournament for a team I coach. I had to have enough clothes for game wear and after game clothes. I also had to carry volleyball equipment into the hotel as well as my coaches bag. The backpack-like straps made carrying super easy! I also need to mention it was raining and none of my stuff got wet. I highly recommend this bag.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Pretty jazzed up on this one. It's comforting to know how durable this thing really is as you put it through the wringer in the airport, trunk of your car, ski mountain etc. Really, you can toss this thing around and not worry about ever damaging it. And the backpack straps are a cool little add-on that I use a ton.

    Best Duffel out there!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have been wanting a black hole duffel for years! I ended up going with the 90L and love the size. It is plenty of room to pack clothes and gear! This bag is too big to be a carry on, but has worked gear as a checked bag.
The shoulder straps that act as backpack wear is a great feature when you have to tote this bag around.
I am so happy with this bag, I actually bought a second one for my boyfriend!

    Black Hole 4 Life!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

All the reviews on this bag are all that you need, I'm just here to tell you that if you have any big trips coming up-this bag is a must have. Durable, lightweight...HUGE. What more could you ask for.

    The best duffel!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

There aren't enough good things I can say about this duffel bag, if you take care of this bag you'll have it for the rest of your life. The 90L size is enough volume to fit just about anything, there are also numerous pockets and locations for clipping on gear that make it amazing. The material is great as well and extremely durable. The best part is that you can fold the bag inside itself down to about 1/5 the normal size for storage when not in use.

Better than the North Face Base Camp

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I spent a lot of time pouring over the Black Hole and North Face's iconic Base Camp. Both are great, rugged bags. But at the large size, the Black Hole is a superior piece of gear.

The Base Camp is slightly larger (95L vs 90L) and certainly a bit more rugged. The ripstop fabric is a slightly heavier gauge than on the Black Hole. If you're using it to haul gear up and down a mountain daily, maybe that extra durability is worth it.

But what you sacrifice in brawniness on the Black Hole--which again, isn't much--you more than make up for with refinements in usability. The internal compartment is better thought out. It has two segmented mesh pockets. There's a liner inside to provide color contrast and make it easier to find stuff. The D-ring system for taking the back-pack straps on and off is ingenious. Takes maybe 15 seconds toggle them on or off. Also, the bottom of the Black Hole has some padding in it, which the Base Camp lacks. Helpful for providing some cushion for you gear.

The Black Hole also includes normal carry straps--which the Base Camp mystifyingly excludes. And the rectangular shape means it's easier to stack things on top of the Black Hole.

Look, both the Base Camp and the Black Hole are great bags. You can't go wrong with them and either should last you a decade of use (at least; I'm hoping for much more). But the Black Hole seems to me to have enough incremental design improvements that the small trade-off in bomb-proofosity makes it notably more usable for 98% of people.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These duffels are the perfect travel companion for any kind of trip. They are durable, lightweight, and can fit literally everything you need: shoes, gear, and all of the clothing you could possibly need to pack. They are my go-to bag and I rave about them all of the time. This is a purchase that you cannot regret. Very practical.

Use it for everything even business

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought a slightly smaller version in 2012 for a 2 week arctic excursion. It held everything except my camera gear which I keep in its own camera backpack. I Iove it so much I have not used a conventional roll-aboard since then. I travel 100k miles a year for business and this is all I use now. I can get it in the overhead space of a small regional airplane where others have to valet their roll-aboard. I use for back country in Alaska and recently took it to Antarctica. But the best part is when your traveling along cobblestone streets in Europe and you just sling it over your back. Think of using a rollaboard on cobblestones!

    These are the best

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I have this big in the 60L, so I ordered some for family members in the 90L as they travel quite a bit. The quality can't be beat, and the 90L is definitely big enough for a week long trip.

    My travel companion

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I started out buying the 45L and have used it so much, I had to buy the larger 90L. These bags are nearly bulletproof and I love (emphasis) the fact that the lid zips around and then flips out of the way and the contrast color on the interior -- both very helpful when digging to find a specific item. These bags are my travel and gear storage staples. Perfect for road trips and airline travel. My suggestion, start with a smaller size and work your way up with future purchases. You'll find a use from basic gym bag to gear laden road trip companion. Not enough praise for these bags!

    My travel companion

    One in every size!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

We now have one in every size. The backpack and the waterproof, durability of this bag makes it our new favorite bags! You cannot meet these bags. This is our favorite size as it is ver versatile from a trip to backing for a day outing for the whole family. We seem to use this size for everything as our family bag!

    Look no further!!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Greatest bag ever made! Love it for hauling fly fishing and snowboarding gear! Patagonia knocked it out of the park with this one.

    Awesome bag!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I can't stand rolly, hard frame suitcases, even the softsided ones that pretend to be duffles. This bag goes from plane to boat to truck with no problems. It's durable, water proof and the shoulder straps help me get it through the airport. Highly recommended!

A critical feature of any bag is a brightly colored interior. Traveling with a bag is one function but living out of it is just as important. In the low light of mornings and evenings, searching for an article inside a dark bag can be truly staring into a black hole. My favorite bag is a Dakine with a silver linterior. Could you consider including interior color to your spec's or photos of the interiors?

Would the 90L be able to accommodate two ski boots as well as clothing for a 5-7 day ski trip?

Do you ship to Korea this product?

    Is it waterproof?

    Best Answer

Hey Ashley - the short answer is yes, the Patagonia Black Hole Duffels are waterproof. The 900D polyester ripstop outer material and DWR finish will keep your belongings dry in most situations. I would not however recommend this for rafting or other water adventures where a true dry sack would be more appropriate. Feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions.
