Stow Patagonia's Down Sweater Hooded Men's Jacket inside its chest pocket on your next backpacking trip, high-elevation climb, or midwinter ski trip—just be sure to let it out regularly so its plush 800-fill Traceable Down insulation retains its soft loft over time. Patagonia's Traceable Down comes from non-live-plucked and non-force-fed geese; a fact that's been third-party-verified. To enhance its green status, Patagonia made the shell out of a recycled polyester ripstop that's light, windproof, and water-resistant thanks to a DWR finish.

Patagonia updated the Down Sweater with a more contoured fit that's longer for better coverage on cold camping trips. At a single pull, the hood cinches comfortably and securely around your head, and the hem and both cuffs help retain the down's wonderful warmth. Patagonia also added two zippered handwarmers and a zippered internal chest pocket that doubles as a stow pocket when it's time to head back home.

    • An insulating layer ideal for climbing, hiking, and skiing
    • 800-fill Traceable Down insulation is lightweight and compressible
    • Weather-shedding shell made from recycled polyester
    • Single-pull adjustable hood is quickly adjusted to combat wind
    • Adjustable hem and elasticized cuffs work to lock in heat
    • Jacket stows in interior chest pocket for easy packing
    • Contoured fit helps reduce bulk and longer hem increases coverage
    • Patagonia is dedicated to crafting sustainable outdoor gear

    Great fit and function

Sitting at camp I threw this over a nano puff and mid weight wool base, toasty warm at 17F and a hefty mountain wind. Fit is perfect for me with a large. I am 6’1 @ 190lbs. I got the desert khaki and love the color.

Thanks for the review! I know I can go either way with M or L depending on how I want the jacket to fit, as an outer layer or midlayer.

      Very warm, lightweight

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'
      • Weight: 9lbs

Have run this through the wringer over the last 6 months. I would buy again 100%. Lightweight and warm, packable, stylish. Bought it after a positive review on outdoorgearlab. Worth every penny.

Thanks for your feedback Ryan! The Down Sweater is one of my all time favorites as well!

      Perfect for Packing

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: xl
      • Height: 6'3"
      • Weight: 220lbs

I bought this in the Spring so cannot review it for warmth. It is extremely light. Once I got the hang of it I was able to easily "pack" the coat into the pocket for use as a travel pillow or just to fit in a suitcase. That's why I bought it and I couldn't be happier. It should serve me well on a trip this fall. I have a fleece jacket from Patagonia that I have worn for about 25 years now. It goes through the wash and comes out great everytime. If this one lasts that long it will outlive me :-) I was concerned about body length and sleeve length since I usually buy talls but this XL is perfect!

      Warm Puffy

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'11"
      • Weight: 125lbs

I love the fleece that is very large inside the collar. Everything else about this jacket is pretty standard in comparison with other puffy jackets in its class. If you don't have one of these already, where have you been the last 8 years?

      Great jacket

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
      • Fit: True to size
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 172lbs

Bought a few of these as gifts for Christmas and everyone loved them.

      A must have

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 174lbs

I finally broke down and snagged one of these bad boys and I'm glad I did! The only negative to report is the jacket fits a little too slim for me but I will adjust in time.

      Awesome

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: M
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 170lbs

      Great all winter

      Decent lightweight down hoody sweater.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 220lbs

Saw it on sale and bought it at a decent price, though elsewhere.
Men's XL fits true to size though it's slightly more roomy in the waist area and slightly more narrow in the shoulders and arms, similar to the non-hoody sweater.
Already own the vest and non-hoody jacket and now own the hoody version to make a complete set. Best of all... all three are red ;)
Hoody is good for windy days so don't worry much about not carrying a fleece hat.
Basically, it's the same as the non-hoody version but with a hood.
Best to wear when it's high 30s F to 40s-50s with lightweight fleece underneath.
The down sweater hoody/non-hoody versions are NOT meant for Cold, wintry weather wear as in mid-30s F or below. The jacket then is meant to be worn as a mid-layer with base layers underneath and worn underneath an insulated jacket/parka as insulation. Contacted Patagonia help line and reps stated as much!
Overall, it's a nice, relatively warm jacket for cooler temps as stated previously and it's fashionable.

      Great puffy

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Xxl
      • Height: 6'2"
      • Weight: 280lbs

This puffy is great, very warm for its weight. It has lost some feathers through the seams, but nothing unusual

Perfect for PNW and New England!!

I really like what the company stands for as a whole, and the quality they provide with their products. Their jackets and shirts always fit me super well and having this jacket for 3 years now there is no tears and its as comfortable as the first time i put it on. Living in Oregon and visiting family in New England during the Winter time this jacket to keep me warm and dry all the time. Its super warm and never too cumbersome to take on trips.

      Great Jacket..

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

This jacket is great...it's light weight yet extremely warm. I was recently skiing in Vermont in 5 degree weather and it kept me warm. XL was perfect at 5'10" 215 with an athletic build and it still had room to layer underneath. Backcountry as always is the best place to buy apparel and equipment. Prices are great and customer service is an industry leader.

Thanks for the great review Michael! I'm glad the Down Sweater is treating you well. Awesome piece!

      my go to down jacket!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

Beyond happy with the performance of this jacket! This down jacket does it all... performs as great insulation layer during cold days on the mountain, holds it's own on mild weather hikes, and still can wear to work in the morning! I've been really happy with this patagonia down jacket and I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

      love it

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

These coats are comfortable and light weight. While not sub zero temp coats and not designed for it they do keep you warm in mid 20-30s temps

      Great comfort and great warmth

I had my last down sweater for 7 Years and still love it. Added the hooded version for extra warmth. Only warning is it seems the sizing is now a little smaller. My mom-hood is a medium I needed a large in the hooded version.

I gifted this to my boyfriend for Christmas, here is his feedback:

        Pros:
The Patagonia Down Sweater Hooded Jacket is the lightest down jacket I have ever owned. I am very impressed with the insulation that this jacket provides. I was also surprised that you can pack the jacket into its own pocket; that will be a very useful feature when I go backpacking.

        Cons:
The jacket only has three pockets. In my book, the more pockets the better.

        Everyone's Favorite Puffy.

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love Patagonia products, They are so reliable and with the lifetime warranty you can't really go wrong. I recently bought this for my father after his very old puffy needed an update. I have the ladies version of this exact jacket and my dad and I wear these almost everyday in the fall/winter! He actually never takes his off... It is the perfect jacket for layering in the winter or belaying your bud at the crag on a really chilly fall day. I have even brushed this against rock and has never snagged or ripped. LOVE.

My girlfriend got me this for a Christmas present and I loved it for a day until the stitches on the left cuff started to come undone. I have literally worn this for one day and the threads are already starting to break. I'm sure this is a defective product and i will be returning it for a new one. On the other hand though, this jacket is super warm and lightweight!

Hey, I'm 6'2" and 185 pounds. Wondering if the M or L would be more sufficient for me.

Can you wear a climbing helmet under the hood?

I'm 5'10, 210 lbs, 36-inch waist, broad shoulders. I usually wear Large or XL in insulated jackets or shells, and I prefer a slightly loose fit (that can be cinched at the hem). What size do you recommend? thanx!

        Hal,

You're definitely right in between Large and XL. Not sure if the XL might be too loose for you, I might try a large first since this can run a touch big...

I am 5' 10" and 220lbs, 46 chest but a little big around the midsection. Should I go with XL or XXL in this jacket? Based on the sizing chart it looks like the XL would fit the chest but I'm concerned it might be snug around the torso. Should this jacket fit snug or loose?

        Best Answer

        Hey Daniel,

I recommend that you go with the XXL based on your size/measurements. Feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions.

I'm buying this for someone that is 6' about 175 lbs and I ordered a large in case they want to layer, is that alright or will they run into problems?

        Jeanette,

It might be a touch big depending on their personal preference on fit, but it will definitely allow for layering while not being too baggy of a fit.

        hello,
6 ft 1in, 195 lbs. Should I get a large or xlarge?? want to be able to wear a sweater of sweatshirt underneath. Thanks !

        Armida,

I think a large might do it for you unless the sweater or sweatshirts you want to layer underneath are super bulky.

        Is this jacket windproof?

        Trevor,

The Down Sweater isn't designed to be fully windproof, but it does do pretty well in some fairly nasty conditions.

Sweet. Thanks! I went ahead and ordered it as it had pretty much everything I was looking for in a down jacket...can't wait to test it out

        Unanswered Question

Is this jacket sized to go over a couple other layers (Fleece and soft shell jacket) or do I need to size up to get it to fit?

        I'm 6ft tall and 165lbs. I wear a medium.

I am 5'10"/185 with a 43" chest. By the sizing guide, it says I should order a large. Thoughts?

Im 5/8 185 and the mid fits like a glove... so it might be to short for u so yes the large is a good choice

My husband is 5'11, 180 lbs. He would typically wear a large but his arms are disproportionate and tend to be longer for his size. As such, he usually has to buy XL. We looked at the size chart and followed the instructions but if that were the case he would wear a small (measures at 32.5 inches). Clearly, we are doing something wrong. If you have any suggestions or recommend a size for him that would be great! Thank you.

        Hi Ashley,

He probably could wear a Large if he has longer arms. Usually I seen people in his range go with medium without long arms. I am 6'4 and 205 lbs the large fits me just right.

So I'm 6'1" and 170 pounds. Should I go with a medium or a large? I don't plan on layering much beneath the jacket.

        Hi Stuart

I would say a medium. I am 6'4 and 205 lbs the large fits me just right.

        I'm 5'60 157lbs Chest100 what size should I get? Thanks

        Hello Starry,

        You should get a medium.

If you have any other concerns please feel free to chat in and we can get you taken care of.

2-is this one good for every day winter in the city wear?

        I'm 5'10 170lbs what size should I get? Thanks

My guess would be medium but it's hard to be certain. Check the size chart - I've had really good luck ordering Patagonia based on my chest size.

        Mike,

I think you'd be pretty happy with a medium.

I am 5,11 and 158. A medium fits me well. I can get a base layer plus a thin sweat shit under it without it restricting much under the arms.

        Chris

Compared the the Hi-Loft version of this jacket (same price), what are the major differences between them, and which one is truly warmer?
Also, how do these jackets handle against heavy wind/rain?

        Josh,

Great question, the Hi-Loft version is using a 600 fill power down and the regular Down Sweater is utilizing an 800 fill power.

So to get a lighter Down Sweater, Patagonia used a high quality down. It really comes down to what you'd like in the jacket? A high quality down and less of it or more insulation of a slightly lower grade? Both with insulate pretty much the same.

In regards to wind/rain, I wouldn't expect much wind protection from any down jacket. Both jackets have a DWR coating to shed come light mist/rain.

So the Down sweater is going to be warmer as it has more down.
