    Handled Tons of Rain

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 180lbs

Our first day on the water canoeing in the backcountry at Algonquin Provincial Park was very heavy rain and stormy all day. I was glad to have this Jacket. It kept the water out for the most part and the hood fit nice with my baseball cap. I would highly recommend this product!

    Gift for dad

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 170lbs

Bought this as a gift for my dad and he loves it. He is 5'8" and 185lbs and the Large fits perfect.

    Solid Windbreaker / rain jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: large
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 170lbs

I went with a large on this one. The medium fit as well but was a touch tighter than I wanted the jacket to fit in the back and shoulders. The jacket isn't too wide either which is nice when sizing up so you don't get that boxy look as you can in other coats.

    Best Rain Jacket Available

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 250lbs

Did a lot or research before buying this coat. Everyone agrees this is as good as it gets, not I do too. I've only worn it a couple times for some summer showers, definitely keeps the rain off well. It does get steamy inside on the hotter humid days, luckily I wasn't outside too long. The hood is great too, plenty of adjustability to dial in the fit front to back and overall height. Jacket is very light weight and compact as well. So glad I picked this up.

Looks good. Feel good. Play good

This jacket does it all three seasons out of the year. Where it on the golf course if it's about to rain, or pack it down into your backpack for a day getaway that you expect to see a cloud in the sky which might rain on you later. Under armpit vendors come in very helpful.

I'm 5 foot10 155 pounds and his jacket fits perfectly. To give you a better reference I'm a 40R suit jacket and everything medium from J Crew

      All Around Winner!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 140lbs

This jacket is so versatile, it's a lightweight rain protection option that can stuff into a pack really easily. I love that this jacket has a 2.5 layer membrane to keep the rain out.
I'd recommend this jacket to anyone who is looking for a great fit, bomber waterproofing, and a great warranty. My friend has one just like this from a few years ago. The membrane began to deteriorate, he took it into a Patagonia location and they replaced it on the spot for him! This jacket's a winner.

      so good!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

I loved this jacket.. wore it all week in Alaska and never once was annoyed by it . It fit's great and kept me warm and dry as intended. Was perfect as it fit over buy puffy coat as well.

Does what it sets out to do

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'8"
      • Weight: 185lbs

I purchased this to play equal parts mud season windbreaker/rain shell/thermal barrier. It's boxy (read: roomy) enough to allow layering but also works equally well as a standalone grab-and-go light jacket.

Perfect for stormy days and traveling

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large

Bought this for a friend for his trip. Fits true to size and was able to be stuffed away for easy travel.

      Decent rain shell

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 155lbs

Pros: Made by Patagonia so you can feel good that you're giving back to the planet a bit with the purchase. Waterproofing is good so far. Breathability is very good. I like the slightly longer cut in the back.
Cons: I miss a chest pocket more than I thought I would. The cut around the neck is tight. I have I thin neck to begin with but I can hardly stand to have it zipped up all the way, it feels like it's choking me.

      Waterproof & Durable

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 175lbs

I have had the Torrentshell for the past year now which has replaced an older Marmot Precip and I am really stoked how well the jacket has held up! Initially I thought I was a medium in this jacket, but went with a large - that is slightly longer on me, but still fits well.

This jacket is constructed with Patagonia's own 2.5layer H2No membrane, 50D recycled ripstop nylon making it durable and bomber, but not too breathable or light. If you are looking for a light and packable waterproof jacket definitely check out the Alpine Houdini. My only qualms with this jacket was it was the sleeves were too long for me in the large and the body was a bit more boxy than I would like them to be.

The Torrentshell has been my go to for fishing ventures out on the river as well as many camping trips. A couple of pockets in this jacket make it pretty versatile for so many activities! (step brothers reference... hopefully you got it)

Patagonia killing it yet again. Hit me up if you have questions on this jacket or anything else you need to pick up to fuel your outdoor passions with the best gear out there.

      Best value around

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'9"
      • Weight: 142lbs

Buying outerwear is a daunting task, many pieces are several hundred dollars and there is a ton of nuance between products. If you're looking for a good looking hard-shell with best in class features the Torrentshell from Patagonia is your best bet.

I've worn a $200 Einn Shell from Lululemon and a $400 Arc'Teryx Beta jacket and the Torrentshell beats them both.

The features, fit and value are best in class and you will be very happy with it.

      Pros
      * Hood stays put
      * Good fit
      * Lots of features
      * Packs small
      Cons
      * No chest pocket
      * Fit could be a little slimmer

      Long Sleeves!

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 180lbs

I bought this jacket to replace my older Patagonia Torrentshell jacket of 2 years. My old jacket was a size M, and fit perfectly. However, this newer model is significantly larger, particularly in the sleeves and in the overall length. I was surprised that the jacket fit so large considering I own numerous other Patagonia jackets, all size M, and they all fit perfectly. So to have this inconsistency in sizing was surprising. Knowing Patagonia's reputation for high quality products, I have no doubt that the jacket is durable and will hold up for a good amount of time. Unfortunately, I will be returning/exchanging the one I bought for a different size or model.

Is the Patagonia Torrentshell Pullover just as good, because i like the way it looks more but it doesn't have the pit zips. Do you think think the pit zips will be important?

I know this is a very late response- but I HAVE to have pit zips. I won't buy a rain shell without them! They make a huge difference to me between whether or not you end up soaked in your own sweat instead of rain :) gotta have that ventilation!

Any idea if this jacket would be appropriate for skiing? I only go really once or twice a year so I don't think I need a full-featured ski jacket, I'd rather buy one like this that can be used year-round.

I'd say no, it isn't really designed for the punishment a jacket can get from skiing. But if you aren't going into the trees, hitting up the park, or expecting to not take a few falls then this should be ok. And ok is about what you'll get, skiing shells are designed with at least a minimal liner to protect from how cold the outer shell can get, rain jackets like this aren't built that way so you WILL need a pretty good mid layer if you want to ski with this jacket.

I normally wear a large shirt. Will a large...

I normally wear a large shirt. Will a large Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket leave sufficient room to layer underneath? The sleeves which are listed as 35-36"will be about 3-4" too long. Will it be reasonably easy to have the sleeves shortened? The reviews seem to conflict -- will the jacket protect in a heavy summer rain (both from heat and downpour)?

      Best Answer

      Hey Mike,

If it helps, typically I wear a medium t-shirt but large in long sleeves and jackets. This rain jacket is designed to be loose fitting and to hand a little long in the sleeves so that you can pull it on without stripping layers and so that it will cover everything underneath. If you normally wear size large than I would honestly suggest you stick with that size for this fantastic jacket. I don't know if I would recommend using this jacket to beat the heat but to escape a summer rain this jacket will be perfect.
