Why We Like The Expedition Pro Bib Short

Pearl Izumi took the popular Expedition Bib to the next level with their all-new Levitate PRO Chamois and luxurious Italian PRO Transfer fabric. Low-profile cargo pockets on the thighs and two small rear pockets provide easy access to smartphones and snacks, and the flexibility to wear any top you prefer without worrying about carrying capacity. Last but certainly not least, this is their first men’s bib short with a drop-tail to make nature breaks quick and easy. Plus, they added water shedding PI Dry® technology to the shorts to shrug off tire spray and light rain. There is no finer choice for long haul adventure.

"cargo" bibs

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

Not really sure what makes these "cargo" bibs, but I guess that's what the industry calls anything that has pockets (all bibs should have pockets imo). The leg pockets are too small to fully fit my phone (Pixel 7, not exactly a huge phone), and the back ones might(?) be able to hold your keys. I never rode with them as I realized they were way too tight on me (5'7, 170lbs, size medium) and wanted to return them so I could get the Varlo bibs. Chamois did feel way nicer than my typical Amazon special bibs, being a thicker and more firm, too bad I didn't get to use it. Leg grippers were also super grippy, like pull your leg hair off grippy, but I guess I'd rather have too grippy than not grippy enough.

I agree with David k... Way too tight

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am 6 ft 160 lbs and have a 30 inch waist, so not exactly a linebacker. I wear a US size small Gore C5 and a medium Santini bib short. I figured a size medium would be plenty here. I can barely pull them up my legs, and to do so makes me feel like they will be ripped. I did a ride with them and my legs felt terrible, like I was losing circulation. Had to return them, might try a large, which is slightly ridiculous. The quality is extremely high, just wished I could wear them!

Great shorts

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I have owned Assos, Rapha, Black Bibs over the years. I am 5' 10, 156lb, 32 waist. I had not bought a pair of Pearl Izumi in a very long time. The shorts are awesome. I very much like the pad and the length of shorts. I tend to like a bit of a longer length short. The pad in particular is very comfortable. The cut of the pad is different than Rapha or Assos. . No issues holding gel, iphone 13 pro or the like the pockets. One last comment, i tend to think of these shorts more of a long distance, multi hour ride type shorts. These are not like Rapha pro lightweight/featherweight type shorts.

Excellent Bib shorts and great fit

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These were my first pair of Pearl Izumi bib short, and they did not disappoint. I really like the pockets for holding snacks on rides. I've put completed several 100+ mile rides in these shorts and washed them numerous times and they've worked exceptionally well, and a few 2-3 hour rides on the trainer. I haven't had any discomfort from the pad wearing out or any signs the shorts were coming undone. I'm getting a second pair since I like them so much.

Weird chamois

Overall materials feel great. The legs are cut very long (I’m 5’ 10” and they come to an inch or so above my knee). The leg cargo pockets are not very deep at all (bars fit fine, phone or banana do not). My biggest complaint is the chamois, though. Not comfortable at all, mostly feels like there’s a rock solid dumpy down there. It tends to shift around a lot, too. So finding a comfortable seats is impossible. I cut a 40+ mile ride short because of how sore my poor perineum had become. Will stick with ASSOS from now on.

Back to the drawing board!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Really disappointed for the first time with Pearl Izumi. I'm 5'-8, 170 lbs, with 24" thighs. I bought a Large I bought these bibs to try out before my wife and I head out across USA via the Southern Tier next year. I love my PI Pro Bibs and with the drop seat feature I thought these would be perfect.... WRONG! Compared to the Pro Bibs the legs are significantly more narrow and are tight around my calves, let alone my thighs. Once up, they felt like tourniquets on my thighs. It was such a relief to take them off after a simple 35 mile ride. I've tried to uploaded comparison photos of the bibs around my calves. The drop seat is basically a pain in the ass! It doesn't work as you stretch the bibs tight down below to sit. Then your so busy keeping the bibs stretched that can't do the paperwork. At $265 look for something else unless your thighs are 15".
