Great quality, but size not true to fit

Size Bought:
32" x 32"
Height:
5' 11"
Weight:
150

I typically wear a size 31" or 32" waist depending on the brand. So I decided on a 32" waist for these prAna pants in the event I add a layer beneath for winter backpacking. From reviews I had read, the size was pretty true to size for others. The pants arrived and do seem like great quality. But the fit is two sizes off, at least. I measured the waist of the pants with a sewing tape measure and got 34". Even with a layer underneath, one size smaller will likely be too big. Disappointed in the fit, and I knew I was taking a risk ordering clothing (especially pants) online. And to not be able to return them and exchange for a smaller size without paying $6.99 for shipping is disheartening. Might just be tightening a belt around them to make it work for the time being. Based on my experience, I would advise ordering one size smaller than what you usually wear to be safe. Or in my case... maybe two.

Pros and cons for hiking.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have been wearing REI zipoffs for years, but this year I decided to go for something with more durability. I bought a pair of Kuhl zipoffs in April. Big mistake. They pretty much disintegrated by the end of July after approx 25 days of backpacking. Returned them and bought these Pranas. Can't comment on durability since I have only worn a re days, but I have a few other observations: Fabric has good amount of stretch, which is nice. I appreciate the 33 inch waist (which spares me cramming into a 32" pair or having a 34" drooping off my backside. The cargo pockets are really low on the legs compared to any other pannts I have worn. Also the shorts portion is really, really long compared to other convertibles -- pretty much covering my kneecaps. I realize the low pockets are needed to make room for a climbing harness and in order to drop the cargo pockets, the designers needed to make the shorts longer; but this is definitely not optimal for hiking on hot days -- i.e. the long shorts really cut down on air circulation above the knee. There are a few tiny air holes in the crotch, but I don't think these really help much with cooling. Final downside, which is pretty huge for hikers is that the lower legs don't have side zippers to allow one to remove them while wearing boots. Also the zippers and pulls are quite small which makes them kind of tough to zip on (i.e. to get get both sides of the zipper engaged so you can start zipping).

Great for first outdoor pants purchase

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I found these on sale and ended up buying them. Great, comfy pair of pants. I like the low-key belts built-in and all the pockets. They are true to being water-resistant(spilled on myself a couple of times) and the zip offs work well! Pockets on the side of the legs don't quite fit a newer phone so beware of that if you want your phone secured but have a larger phone. Although it fits with an iPhone 8, it is a tight fit and I'm a bit worried that it will break the zipper after extended use. I feel confident climbing in these pants in that they won't rip as easily in the crotch area. The only room for improvement I would suggest is moving the small belt buckle more to the right side so that it doesn't interfere as much with a climbing harness.
