Why We Like The Zamberlan Latemar NW Backpacking Boot

Hand-crafted in Italy, Zamberlan's Latemar NW Backpacking Boot is so nice to look at that we're tempted to put it on a shelf. If we did that, though, we'd miss out on serious comfort and performance on the trail. The Latemar is built for heavy-duty backpacking, with a waxed Hydrobloc full-grain leather upper that repels dirt and water, along with a soft calf leather lining that protects and pulls moisture away from the skin.

Its smooth, welted construction lends serious durability, and the ZBPK Performance Fit last fits the foot like a glove, so we can cover serious ground without blisters or unnecessary discomfort. No matter how rocky and slick it gets, the multi-directional self-cleaning lugs of the Vibram NorTrak outsole keep us locked in, so we can focus on our beautiful surroundings without worrying that each step might send us sliding.

Very nice mountain boot

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This boot reminds me of my good old leather hand stitched boots that last...almost a lifetime. I doubt i will be able to wear down these sturdy beasts, great quality leather and stitching. The inner calf lining is so nice, always been on of my favorites. Seemed snow proof on day 1 in testing (it had snowed quite a bit). Also quite good traction in the snow/ice and looks like they will be solid on the trail come spring. I'm thrilled.

I purchased these before the redesign and I have holes where the logo use to be on the tongue, exposing the foam beneath I have put three years up down through and under the mountains. Backpacking, wandering, hiking, foraging, traveling, farming, grunt work and more. I live in the PNW with salty moist humid air and I’d prefer these on mid to challenging routes and adventures. I don’t mind the weight as they fit like a glove now with the help of Obenaufs products. Clean them up and dress them well and you’ll be fine Cons: break-in, shoelaces are crap, the insole is garbage, upkeep to the leather (the coating zamberlan puts on is just plastic and is an absolute joke to this leather product. This is a great 3 season boot that can handle the snow but the fit limits thick socks

Super Sturdy

These are by far the nicest and most expensive hiking boots I have ever bought. I have about 40 miles of hiking in them on dirt and rock trails, worn them casually several dozen times, and worn them in the snow during ski trips. I have walked and worked the sole off of several pairs of cheaper hiking boots and I was looking for a boot that would last, that I could re-sole, and that did NOT have a waterproof liner. Here is my review: Pros: Boots are very sturdy, thick leather uppers. I am mostly a fair-weather hiker, and these boots are overkill for what I do most of the time. Boots are very supportive and capable of long treks and heavy loads. They look great, smell great, breathe well, and clean up well after hikes. I think the leather lining and lack of water-proof membrane keeps the boot from stinking. My feet have never gotten wet, but knowing that these boots are not water-proof, I have avoided submerging them in water as much as possible. Cons: Boots are heavy and take a long time to break in.

Well made but larger than normal volume

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

There is no question that the quality is top notch and the length is consistant with the Zamberlan Vioz but the internal volume seems greater than the Vioz to me. Using a tape measure inside the boot I get an 11 1/2 measurement from the toe to the heel (half way through the arc of the tape measure at the heel) for both this boot and the Vioz but it takes a heavier sock than for the Zioz for this boot to feel "right". This aspect of fit can be difficult to spot initially for a heavy and stiff boot of this type so just be aware. Just FYI my measured foot length is 29 CM and a size 12 M fits well for most brands as it does for the Vioz. I don't know if an 11 1/2 for this model would have fit better for the Latemar; I didn't try it but as I said the internal length measured the same. This boot has not been used much yet but but beyond what can be returned; it will be used more in late fall and winter. I do recommend it but be careful with the fit for volume.

A Tale Of Two Boots

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

As suggested above I am reviewing 2 boots a left one and a right one. First off the build quality on both are what you would expect for boots this price. The craftsmanship is outstanding! However the leather used in one is not even comparable to the other. The right boot is literally a piece of art and made frome very good full grain leather. The left one however is by far the worst I have ever seen or experienced as far as full grain leather goes. I understand leather is a natural material but the amount defects and blemishes are atrocities for such an expensive and well made boot. Some of the defects are in the worst possible place and has developed cracks in less than 100 miles.

The Craftsmanship, Quality, and out of the box fit is quite amazing. I've had several other boots from reputable brands, these are on another level entirely. The leather is oh so nice, I've been using Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP on the leather upper and leather inner lining with great results. I measured US11 D on the Brannock Device, I ordered US11 and the fit is perfect.

I bought these a couple of years ago. Used them for day to day guiding tours in Ak. Put them thru a one week mountaineering trip, and that's when flaws in materials started surfacing. There's a tear where the leather flexes near the big toe. I use Italian boots made with Vibram soles and nubuck uppers exclusively. These didn't match up with other brands at this price point. My Garmonts lasted 15 years between two pairs. I might give this model another chance tho. The specs are there.
